When a rider is a no-show, do you.....

Poll closed Jun 23, 2015.
  1. Cancel the trip as "Rider no-show," and (maybe) get paid cancellation fee?

    100.0%
  2. Start/End trip and get paid based on Minimum trip fee?

Some drivers will start the trip if they have to wait more than 1-2 minutes for a passenger, then end the trip if the passenger is a no-show. Others (including myself) don't start the trip (unless passenger says to "go ahead") while waiting. There are advantages and disadvantages to each train of thought.

Put your thoughts down below: what do you do?

I start the trip immediately upon positive contact with the rider, by sight or by phone.
That is the earliest time driver gets to see rider's destination.
Very rarely (usually at bar closing time) i have to cancel due to rider no show.

Cancel fees are higher $5 cancel fee -20% = $4
    Minimum ride $4 in most areas for x is $4-$1 srf-20% =$2.40

It will also have an adverse effect on your rating. When you cancel for no show, being to drunk, to many people, etc. They can't rate you. On the other hand if you start the trip before the pax have been verified and have made contact if you have to end the trip for whatever reason there goes a 1 star and closer to being deactivated.

I can't speak "officially" for Uber, nor is this forum authorized by Uber, but I'll give you my $.02.
I agree 100% Starting/Ending a trip gives the passenger the opportunity to rate the driver; pretty safe bet that if a driver didn't pick the passenger up, the driver's going to get 1 star, passenger is going to complain to their CC company that the charge was fake or for services not received, Uber may (reluctantly) agree to refund the charge and possibly take away your commission. Customer has a bad taste in their mouth about Uber, etc. If its a cancellation charge, the CC may be less willing to resolve the disputed charges (customer ordered service and cancel policy is "clearly" explained to customer).

It's even more satisfying at 5 mins and 5 seconds as they finally come out the door in a flat out hurry to get somewhere and you still cancel.

So, I've done myself out of a better paying job, I'm trying to modify thier inconsiderate behaviour. If they care to ask why I left, I tell them straight that it's an on-demand service and 5 minutes is my only obligation to wait. Perhaps they will learn to be considerate to future drivers

Every pickup is different, weigh up the opportunities. I went to one pickup in a quiet industrial area except for this crazy party in this one office unit. Guy waves to me out the window, I wave back. 5 minutes later dishevelled girl comes out looking for Cab. I asked if she knew my Pax,
"yeah just been partying, with him, he's got a long way to go up there with the others" she says
"Great! He can pay for your trip home, get in!"

Off we went, I got her name if ever there was a query with the charge, but nothing came of it. I could've waited there for ever. He didn't cancel, had more on his plate so it seemed.

(With over 1200 trips, who cares if you get a 1 star)
